Root Cause

  • Unsupported currency: The card issuer does not support transactions in the specified currency.
  • Card product limitations: Some cards, especially region-locked or local currency cards, cannot process multi-currency transactions.
  • Gateway configuration restrictions: The merchant's payment gateway does not support currency conversions for the attempted card type.
  • Regulatory or geographic restrictions: The issuing bank prevents currency conversions based on local financial regulations.

Troubleshooting and Solutions

Ask the customer to

  • Retry the transaction using a card that supports international or multi-currency transactions.

  • Contact the card issuer to confirm if currency support can be enabled for the card.

  • Verify that the merchant account, payment gateway and Chargebee are configured to support the required transaction currency.

  • Clearly display supported currencies in the product / plan page to help customers choose the appropriate payment method.

  • Offer alternative payment methods that support multi-currency transactions.
