Root Cause

  • Repeated declines: The same card has been used multiple times unsuccessfully within a short window.

  • Fraud prevention mechanisms: The gateway or issuer temporarily blocks further attempts to prevent potential fraud.

  • Card issuer policies: Some issuers enforce temporary lockouts after several consecutive failed attempts.

Troubleshooting and Solutions

  • Inform the customer that too many recent attempts with their card have been declined.

  • Ask the customer to:

    • Wait for some time before attempting the transaction again.

    • Use an alternative payment method, such as a different card, wallet, or UPI.

    • Contact their card issuer to check if additional security measures are being applied.

  • If smart dunning is enabled with the normal_retry scenario, allow your system to automatically retry the transaction later.
